The theme of this book is viral hepatitis. This subject is all but new, as many well written papers, articles and reviews already exist on the bookshelves of scientists working in this field. However this is an area of continuous evolution. It is enough to think that thousands of years have passed just in order to establish the infective nature of the disease, centuries to document the fact that it is caused by specific pathogenic agents and only a few decades to acquire the enormous body of knowledge which constitutes that presently available. We, therefore, are undergoing a massive phase of both scientific and technological development. This situation, I would say, requires the frequent publication of updates which should contain both basic information and a resume of the latest breakthroughs. This is the spirit of this book, in which one has tried to concentrate on major issues and not sink unnecessarily into details, as an excess of information may obscure fundamental concepts. The structure of the book encompasses different viruses, each with their infective, epidemiological and pathological implications. New pathogens have been identified which cause serious disease and genetic mechanisms of the more noted pathogens have been elucidated. These discoveries have led to the hope of therapy and the possibility of eradication of these infections, through the use of vaccines and global scale prophylaxis programs These points are discussed in separate chapters, including a final section on the therapy of disease and the prevention of infection. In addition, we have tried to point out that even with all the knowledge gained and effort spent, viral hepatitis continues to be a chilling reality. To resolve the problem, it is necessary to ask oneself; how much of that which has already been done has really been of use and how much more needs to be done and with emphasis in which direction.
